HEADSHIP Bible: Genesis 2 and 3

tree_of_iaYou know the HEADSHIP (Husbandly & Ecclesiastical Authoritative Dominance, Subverting Her Into her Place) Bible? John Piper and Gavin Peacock just gave us another peek into their Bibles. This time, it is from Genesis 2 and 3.

Genesis 2

…9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of increased authority over another human…

16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of increased authority over another human, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”…

Genesis 3

3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, “You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.”

4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, having authority over Adam.”

6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining authority, she took some and ate it. She kept it away from her husband because she wanted to usurp his authority, but he grabbed and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized the power balance between them was disturbed…

Complementarians say the darndest things: Leaving and cleaving as alleged evidence of male headship

I heard a new one today:

“God charged the man to take the lead for establishing a marriage and a new household (Gen. 2:24). This further proves male headship.”

Genesis 2:24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

What a prime example of reading into the text what you want to see! Here are two examples of men leaving parents and cleaving to a wife:

  1. Anne goes to Bob and his parents: “Come along, Bob”, she says. “I want you to marry me.” Bob leaves his parents and marries Anne.
  2. Charles goes to Edna (who may or may not live with her parents): “Come along, Edna,” he says. “I want you to marry me.” Charles leaves his parents and marries Edna.
He is going to leave his mother, but he is not taking initiative!

He is going to leave his mother, but he is not taking initiative!

Regardless of who took charge, (more…)

Men should lead? Responding to Wbmoore (Part 1)

Do creation and the fall make men leaders?

Moore starts with the creation account in Genesis 2, and highlight the part where Eve is formed from Adam. He then says:

Further, Scripture tells us that the woman is to be ruled by her husband, because Eve was deceived.

Genesis 3:16 To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children ; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.”

But that is simply eisegesis – seeing things in scripture that is just not there. The words are “he will rule“, not “he is supposed to rule” or “he will do right if he rules.” Jesus also said snares will take little ones from him (Matt. 18:7), but He never told anyone to place such snares. (more…)
